Knowing the Jesus as he is portrayed in The Bible one might easily conclude that the reason he never referred to himself as the son of God was simply that he was a humble man – not one to boast but one that was a doer of the word and not just one that spouted his greatness.
Or it might be that Jesus never called himself the son of God for the same reason he never explicitly answered any questions relating to this until his trial – preferring to let people make their own minds up based on his words and deeds (countless people have and will claim to be the son of God – there will never be any shortage of such people).
But in any case – if you were the son of God as Christians think of it – i.e God in flesh – why would you say you were and stir up all kinds of problems before your time had come (your execution) thus shortening the time you had to carry out your mission to spread the truth? You probably wouldn’t let this fact be widely known or even say it until the time was necessary, and it was necessary to bring all your teachings and the meaning of your visit to earth absolutely crystal clear once all your teaching had ben completed – after all, by claiming to be God or at least empowered by God for our unitarian friends (and proving it as Jesus did) you would certainly be executed in a matter of days by the powers that were then. “We are not stoning you for doing good works, but because you, a man are making yourself out to be god.” said the Pharisees!
Knowing Jesus he was a doer of the word and preferred to do and demonstrate God’s will rather that talk about it – anyone can talk about it – but who would willingly go to their death for our sins if really they knew it was all made-up. And before anyone says; “well a mad person might!” – remember that Jesus never said a single thing that one would associate with a mad person – in fact everything he said was profoundly honest and true, and stunned all his listeners leaving them speechless and unable to refute his claims and decrees – even his enemies.
But is there another simpler reason Jesus never said; “I am the son of God”? Yes – there might well be, and I’ll let the video below do the explaining here…
