God had already told them what was ok to do and what was not. So why ‘eat’ from the tree? “I’ll decide for myself what’s good an evil.” These are effectively the words that Eve spoke and Adam shortly followed in the spirit of when she ‘ate’ from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
She would eat the fruit, assimilate it and decide for herself if what God said was true. Not realising or even being fully aware (having been deceived by listening to and believing the accusing words of the serpent), that the act itself was one of rebellion – the very thing Satan had done having been given clear limits by God.
What is good and what is evil we humans have been taking upon ourselves to decide ever since. It has been God’s plan from the beginning to restore us to our former glory (if we will let Him by first laying down the law of heaven (10 commandments) and then even going so far as writing them in our hearts so we are without excuse.
