When I asked a friend the other day (amidst the Chinese Coronavirus Covid-19 spike) who as a big-time dealer with Europe (and China) as well as my other friend who is also a businessman (and I mean 1000’s employees) who was also a staunch remainer (don’t worry we still love each other) arguing strongly against is as possibly suicidal for some – or at least very dangerous for Britain’s economy at large. When I asked the former how his business is responding to Brexit – ie the ‘cliff’ – almost nothing in response. In fact he waved his hand and said – “ahh.. it’s fine – we just re-routed the lorries through another way – all going smoothly now.” Wait a minute – wasn’t that exactly what all the leavers were saying all along just using common sense with no business knowledge to speak of – that with a few tweaks and a little elbow grease – without any figures – just using common sense one could get over this ‘mountain’?
To whine about the clearly invented Brexit ‘cliff’ in the face of Coronavirus now would look even more ridiculous
Now the latter friend I mentioned – love him – said a month ago before covid-19 – “oh it won’t be a big problem – we’ll adapt and may lose a little of the profits.” Wait a minute – wasn’t it the end of the world for British business – all a big scam by silly small-minded old fashioned folks paranoid about immigration and 100 others reasons than were never in my mind as a leaver? (all I wanted was our freedom back). Not only that – doesn’t this Covid-19 put all the Brexiteers daft ‘fears’ in real perspective so that to say anything now would look (more) ridiculous, since rearranging a few lorries is a walk in the park compared to keeping a workforce working with Covid-19/Coronavirus. The thing is they are not bad people – on the contrary – but even they – intelligent businessmen got swept up in the media hype and felt they had to go along – thus perpetrating what the rest of us small-minded folks knew was an invented fear and myth.
So lets us never forget this lesson: Brexit was just as all us leavers said – NO PROBLEM – it simply meant (as we all insisted) that the rich businessmen will have to do what are best at and paid fortunes for – re-organising – a little extra work – do a little re-arrangement and lose a little cash (if any if they do the job right and get trading with the new opportunities available) in order to take back the freedom we had lost. Of course any divorce – especially in an unwanted relationship (had they been open about what it was – a new EU federation not simply a trading block) and an entanglement that’s been carefully and sneakily carried out over 40 years like a poison ivy around our country was always going to involve a little ‘blood’ and sweat and perhaps even a tear to separate.
Who is at fault here? Is it the business men and women? Hmm – perhaps they were weak minded in feeling they must go along with the nonsense – but the real culprits (apart from obviously the career politicians) are the media – the ones who always – though they didn’t used to 40 years ago – whip everyone into such a frenzy (most of them and their pay-masters are staunch globalists) that for any business owner not to go along with Brexit – in the unlikely event anything actually negative happened to the economy or their business as a result (yet we came through 2 wars right?.. the fact is Brexit is nothing in comparison) might mean them facing having the finger pointed at them – or even legals issues should staff be laid off and people lose livelihoods.
And of course what really upsets me is the media feeding our kids endless fibs about Brexit (and other fabrications) being the end. So it’s not surprising at all that business owners went along with this media wolf-cry of Brexit doom-and-gloom – and as we see now the same media behavior is in danger of causing our leaders to over-compensate out of fear of public outcry having eaten up the all too common media BS and make things worse than necessary. Let’s hope in this very serious time compared to little old Brexit – sensibility will prevail.
