Many of Our Burdens We Place on Ourselves

I wanted to title this article; ‘Most Burdens We Place on Ourselves’ – but that would be fine coming from someone sitting in his flat with light, heat and food in his belly, and life for most people in this planet is simply hard going period.

Perhaps this man has no choice to earn his living and survive, but many of us are just creating our own problems and need to make serious changes to our attitudes and lifestyles - I know - because that was me!

Is this you? Perhaps this man has no choice to earn his living and survive, but many of us in affluent parts of the world are to some extent ‘spoilt’ and good at creating our own problems. We may need to make serious changes to our attitudes and lifestyles – I know – because that was me and I’m still working on it!

However – it’s still true to a large extent I believe, even in poor countries people get involved in things they know better about, especially spiritually. I would dare to say that most of us in the West at least, where life is relatively easy materially, place most of our burdens on ourselves. We ask God for strength to endure our much of the time self-created problems, but do not ask for wisdom on how we can be set free from our stresses, worries and illnesses by hearing what God would have us change in our lives. His voice is often very quiet in the babble of life.

Of course life is never that simple but I’m convinced we can make things easier on ourselves if we stop for a minute and think; “my people perish through lack of knowledge” says God in The Bible.

Ask Him for knowledge and wisdom – even if it means giving up things you really want to hold on to. You’ll have to give them up in the end anyway. Are your eating habits the real culprit to your lack of energy? Are you stuffing yourself with rich foods and giving yourself acid and drowsiness through excessive carbs as I was and ended up being prescribed an inhaler for what the doctor thought was ‘asthma’!

This is the kind of thing the still small voice can help you with. Why are people rejecting me or avoiding me? is it because I am argumentative, a know-all or hard work to be around? Do I need to start looking outward more instead of inward and thank God for what I have got – each breath is a miracle for a heap of cells to be breathing – rather than complaining about what I haven’t got. We are all dying, some a little sooner than others so don’t waste a minute of the life you have been given. See your glass half full not half empty!

Learn to praise God when nothing seems right as Job did – it’s in The Bible for a great reason. The Devil wants you to curse God for our predicaments and undoing this is the key to peace – even in the worst of times. Then your load may just become a little bit lighter.
