Appearances are deceptive because people are so careful about crafting how they appear to others. This is nothing new and no bad thing if it is to look smart for a boss, parents or some other person or group you wish to show respect to – and of course to respect your own body – the temple God gave us all where He wishes to dwell.
The problem is, men spend too much time trying to craft their appearance to gain the admiration of other men – and that’s no good. This is pride and a thirst to be better that can never be quenched. Yet we all fall into this – it’s almost unavoidable in today’s world not to want to be ahead of one’s neighbour.
We see this as Jesus’ last public appearance was as naked, humiliated and nailed to a cross for our sake. Jesus was no respecter of men so as people called to follow his example, let’s not worry too much about gaining the acceptance of men and what they think of us. Let’s just serve others and in doing so serve God.
