Is it What or Who That is Important?

When the apostle Paul was in prison and awaiting possible execution – he didn’t say; “I know in what I believe” – he said; “I know in whom I believe.” It seems from The Bible that the person of Jesus, and trusting in him and his words, his honesty and truthfulness and goodness, is more important than getting one or other of our doctrines straight – many of which are man-made in the first place designed to alter God’s word to fit our sinful lives – rather than changing our lives to fit with His commandments.

Of course doctrine must be important – especially wrong doctrine as it will affect all our decisions, but I submit that in order to get right doctrine – one must go through and submit to the righteousness of Jesus and God’s Spirit first – in that order. We cannot hope get to Jesus and God and the right doctrine by first trying to getting our doctrine straight – it won’t happen – we’ll get our thinking skewed.

The Spirit of God is what leads us into all truth of what we read in The Bible. It simply cannot be the case that one gets to heaven by getting your doctrine straight – i’e on a technicality. Otherwise it would mean someone like Hitler – so long as he had the right doctrine, but no love for Jesus or God can enter heaven ahead of someone who perhaps has a wrong doctrine – but loves God with all their heart mind and soul. That cannot be right. And so Paul tells us what believing in Jesus means – it means not just believing that he really existed, but believing in him – his goodness and his ability to save our souls from hell.
