If The Devil Wants to Join your Church He Joins to Choir

I wouldn’t normally comment on such a topic – i.e music and church, but because I am an accomplished musician (whatever that means – but I mean, quite experienced) I feel somewhat qualified to talk about music and church.

The fact is – ego and music are these days in times of a media run and influenced world, run hand in hand as we all know at least subconsciously that music and being able to play music – especially jazz, is a kind of voodoo – a ‘magic’ and we all know that musicians are revered accordingly (of course Jesus rightly, was no respecter of persons).

Accordingly all we musicians (well, at leat 90% of us) want to be pop stars in our own lunch times because of the ‘auto-respect’ and all the other perks it brings. But when music becomes a profession – i.e professional, it often gets out of hand. And this is why when David appointed choir masters he made sure they were prophetic. Not ego-centric paid stage giants.

So make sure when you appoint a choir master you look more at the person’s character than the persons musical ability. I can tell you that having spent thousands of hours in my bedroom (before I was a Christian) to become ‘better’ (now I know there is no such thing as there are not enough hours in the day to become the best at anything) than all the other musicians out there the heart is most important here.

Thankfully God showed me the error in my thinking and pride forcibly (I was not about to give in lightly) and now I am happy just to sit in the background and back others more humble and often more gifted that I am!
