“If you find the perfect church – don’t join – cos you’ll ruin it!”
I heard this little saying today, and I’m sure it’s an old one that’s been circulating the church for years, but I thought there is a lot of truth in this little joke. Of course we should join, or at least attend imperfect churches – I mean God is in the reform business right? – not the ready-made-perfection business – when it comes to the reformation of people, churches, businesses, and even the reform of entire countries.
The thing is – most of us have searched for a perfect church – and been disappointed along the way either by the people that attend or the pastors because they have failed to live up to our expectations. I suppose the lesson is that we need to reform ourselves rather than expect others to be perfect. We need to become the people we expect others to be – unless we are deluded enough to think there is no work to do!
