When I was a kid, I remember as a six year old in 1977 standing in the playground after seeing some news reports and TV programmes relating to war and in those days it was all about the ever imminent WWIII.
I can distinctly remember feeling sick in the pit of my stomach, and thinking to myself that adults were the cause of all the worlds problems and how back-to-front it was, that the children in the playground – the ones the adults were supposed to be teaching were more civilised (now I admit that I didn’t know the word ‘civilised’ at six but the sentiment was the same).
But I soon learned that everything people did in adulthood was learned and expanded upon what they learned in the playground. I then had to endure six years of playground terrorism from school bullies and as a result of that (and a general depressed hopelessness at the state of mankind – yes I knew there was no political remedy and that men were just bad period even then my small mind had worked that out. Takes one to know one?.. perhaps.)
When I brought this to the attention of my parents of course they said it was silly but I knew better even at six. The Holy Sprit had firmly set the truth in my heart and had given me eyes to see what the world was really like.
So now that I am 44, left the playground and civilised have I changed my view that as we get older we become more ‘adult’ more ‘mature’. Definitely not! And it would be 20 years after my playground experience that I would read the words of jesus in The Bible who said (paraphrase); “In order to enter the kingdom of heaven we must become like children.” As soon as I read that I knew that the truth of God’s inspired word matched exactly my inner childhood naivety and the Holy Spirit testifying inside me.
We have a lot to learn from children and in my dafter moments I fantasise that in the new kingdom they will rule over us adults and show us how we should really live. After all it’s not normally children that murder, abuse, torture and starve. Although they are learning well from us – the debauched and dreadful media, entertainment and games we put out to corrupt them.
Their yes is usually yes, and their no, is no. They speak the truth a whole lot more than most adults and are far less corrupt and hardened. We seriously need Jesus if we are to ever have a hope of reversing this hardening process.
