OK – we all know a glass of wine won’t hurt and small amounts of red wine especially may have health benefits with all its anti-oxidants, and it’s even prescribed as a pain reliever to a dying man in The Bible (please look this up) – but drinking alcohol regularly for recreational reasons? – well it’s up to you and no one’s putting a gun to your head – not even Jesus – though he does warn us very sternly that “drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God” and goes on to relate this to thieves murderers, adulterers and a bunch of other bad things. Sure – Jesus turned water to wine – it doesn’t incidentally tell us if he drank it or not – he may of, but I very much doubt it if it were strong drink that he created. In those days grape juice straight from the grape was called wine – and when wine was strongly fermented in those days it was called strong drink as we see in The Bible.
So yes you can drink alcohol as a Christian, all things are permissible (but not necessarily good for us) and nothing is evil in and of itself, but remember people who are not Christian (and even Christian) and young and vulnerable and impressionable and may even be alcoholic will be watching you as a Christian. You don’t want to be a stumbling block to any one.
But if you are still in doubt as to the merits of drinking as a Christian have a look at the list this guy below gives us relating to alcohol and the havoc it wreaks. I’m not much into cool pastors with crisp designer suits, shiny pressed shirts, logos to be in with the kids, big TVs and flashy backdrops but I’ve watched a lot of this guy and unlike the Osteens’ and the other mega churches run by the likes of Hillsong and Hinn he’s not afraid to call a spade a spade and if necessary lose a few of his congregation in the process – always the sign of a genuine preacher (i.e not ones that preach smooth words to keep bums on seats and money firmly in coffers).
