Laying Down Your Life

“No man loves greater than to lay his life down for another.”

What does the above statement mean? Does it mean you would die for your brother or sister? It might do. That would be a demonstration of love and depending on how much suffering your death entails you would be sacrificing more or less and that would be a great thing you did.

But what does Jesus really mean here when he says; lay down your life? Laying down your life I wager means giving your life, sharing your life, giving of your time, money, health and wealth for your fellow brethren AND believe it or not (most Christians don’t seem to get this part) – your non Christian friends too. Remember it says that we should serve each other – ESPECIALLY our brethren which by definition means we ought to be serving our non-Christian friends too so that; “they may see our good deeds and believe.”

No, we must lay down our lives in the full sense – give in the way that our flesh desires not to – i.e to give of our TIME! We must give what we have not caring that we might lose our days, money, standing in society and other things we want to hold on to in the natural. It’s natural for all young people to be taken in the the worlds enticements and convince themselves that laying down your life is going to church and holding your hands in the air and placing some money in the bucket.

Meanwhile we spend our days pleasing ourselves, developing our careers and families – non of which are wrong, but all of which become less and less important as we realise the true nature of reality – that ALL in this world – our deeds and possessions will be tested by fire.

If we are serious in our faith, there will come a time when the reality hits home as it has finally me – that to be a Christian really does mean laying down your life, picking up your cross and following him.
